How to THRIVE in the New Year

goal setting mental health midlife athlete Dec 30, 2022

I love the possibilities that the new year brings. I know it’s Cliché and a little dreamy, but I totally buy into it every year.

The magic of a new, unmarked calendar, a blank slate, a fresh start.

But I’m also a realist. I know that going from one year to another doesn’t come with a magic switch; but one thing I never want to lose, no matter how old I get, is my belief in hope and the power of perspective.

Sometimes we need to step back and stop thinking the world is out to get us or that the universe is testing our patients on purpose. We can’t control a lot of things, BUT we can control how we react to them.

What are your feelings going into the new year? Are you excited? Afraid to dream?

I’ve always been someone who prefers to go through life with positivity and a glass half full attitude.

So when perimenopause and this new midlife chaos started to impact my life, the question I asked myself was not “how can I survive this?” but rather “how can I thrive during this time?

It’s a mental mind trick, for sure, but a powerful one that works and actually has science behind it.

Remember, YOU are in charge of how you take on this opportunity. YOU have the power to view this time to empower yourself, to fuel your ambition, or you can opt to just wait around, and waste another year of opportunity!

But that’s not YOU!! I know you’re ready to make some moves. I know YOU see the potential. I know that YOU recognize that time is a blessing and should not be wasted.

So today I want you to start planning how you would like to take on this new year. This new opportunity.

What would you like to focus on? Your health? Your relationships? Your career goals? Finances/Retirement? Getting back to enjoying life? Whatever it is - YOU CAN DO IT!!

No matter what your focus is going into the new year I want you to THRIVE!! And you’ll notice as you start to focus on one of these key areas by creating a strong daily habit you’ll begin to thrive in other areas of your life as well.

When you move your body you feel better, you eat better, you sleep better. When you feel good, you feel confident enough to work on your relationships and career goals - it all spirals into a life you are proud of!

Here are a few of my favorite THRIVING in The New Year Tips:

  • Daily Movement- seldom does a day go by that I don’t intentionally move my body. Exercise is a great way to feel happy, energetic, and less stressed. But remember, movement does have to be a high cardio workout or strength training at the gym. Movement can be playing soccer in the park with your kiddos or grandkids. It can be working in your garden. Find something you enjoy and do it! Personally, I'm a girl that likes a lot of options - make movement FUN!
  • Enjoy a Nutrient Dense Diet - Whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean animal or plant based proteins. Limit caffeine, sugar, and alcohol to help keep your mood stable, brain clear, and weight steady.
  • Quality Sleep - When life is crazy sleep hygiene is so important. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine is a great way to begin getting that sleep your body is craving!
  • Get out in nature - whether it’s taking a hike, gardening, or just sitting outside sipping your morning coffee, being with nature can help create a sense of peace.
  • Have a hobby - Whether you want to learn something new or get back to an old hobby sitting in your storage closet, getting back to doing something you love is a great way to release that creative side. It’s okay to give yourself permission to do more of the things that bring you joy. You do so much for everyone else, it’s okay to do something for you!
  • Get Lost in a good book - whether it’s a fun, flirty romance novel or a suspenseful mystery, snuggling up with a great book is the perfect way to relax and lose yourself in another world.
  • Strengthen those Special Relationships - Take time to spend quality time with your favorite people - your partner, important family members, and special friends. Learn to say yes to healthy, loving relationships and no to toxic relationships that no longer serve you.
  • Practice Daily Gratitude - I love starting my day with my gratitude journey. This is a great opportunity to practice with a glass half full attitude. Some days you may be grateful for BIG things like closing a sale you’ve been working on, some days it may be little things like experiencing a beautiful sunset.
  • Be confident in the skin you are in! Confidence seems to increase with age which is definitely one bonus that comes with getting older. Being comfortable in your own skin is powerful! It’s okay to want to work on yourself, to improve how you look and how you feel - there is nothing wrong with that, but I promise if you don’t love yourself at a size 20 you won't love yourself as a size 6.
  • Be proud of the woman you are. The obstacles you’ve overcome. The battles you have fought and won. There’s nothing like a gorgeous woman that is entirely comfortable with who she is and could care less what people think. (PS that’s you girlfriend)
  • Finally, to really thrive sometimes you just have to let go! Let go of the things, people, situations that drain you, that drag you down, that no longer serve you.

Here's to a great year
