Empty Nest Calendar Anxiety: Why I Overschedule Now That My Kids Are Grown
Aug 01, 2026For close to thirty years, my calendar was never mine. It belonged to school schedules, sports schedules, Girl Scouts schedules, practice pickups, field trips, and other people's needs stacked five deep before noon. I built an entire identity around being the person who could hold it all.
Then my kids grew up. And somewhere in the last couple of years, without really noticing it happen, I started filling my own calendar back up with the same intensity I used to fill theirs.
The Empty Nest Habit Nobody Warns You About
I noticed it recently looking at my week. Event planning, content calendars, back to back calls, a fitness group session, another event, another deadline. On paper it all looks like ambition. Drive. A woman building something real. And a lot of it is exactly that.
But if I'm honest with myself, some of it is something else. Some of it is that an empty square on my calendar makes me deeply uncomfortable in a way I haven't fully understood until recently. Empty used to mean something was wrong. Empty used to mean someone's needs weren't being met. For over half of my life, empty was never neutral.
So now, even with grown kids and a business that is genuinely mine, I catch myself reaching to fill the gap before I even ask whether it needs filling.
Not Every Commitment Comes From the Same Place
Here's the part I'm still working through: not every commitment is coming from the same place. Some of what's on my calendar is the real work, the speaking, the coaching, the fitness group, the things that actually move my life and my business forward and light me up. And some of it is just old muscle memory dressed up as productivity. Same behavior, completely different engine underneath.
I don't have this fully figured out. I'm not going to pretend I do. But I've started asking myself one question before I add something new: am I doing this because it matters, or because an empty square still feels like a problem to solve?
If Your Calendar Filled Back Up Too, You're Not Alone
If you're in the stage where the kids are grown, or gone, or just less dependent on you day to day, and you've noticed your own calendar quietly filling back up, I want you to know you're not the only one. This transition doesn't get talked about nearly enough. We spend so long being needed on a schedule that isn't ours, and then when that schedule opens up, nobody warns us how disorienting the open space can actually feel.
It's not weakness. It's not "you should just relax and enjoy it." It's a recalibration, and it takes time, and it takes noticing. If you're navigating this stage and want a more structured way to work through what your body and your life are actually asking for next, it starts with the same kind of noticing I'm describing here.
I'm noticing. I'm working on it. If you are too, you're in good company.
